WORKSHOP ON BIOINFORMATICS

Here there were about 37 participants from all over orissa. They were mostly faculty members, with some m.tech students with an inclination to join as faculty when they pass out. The program was inaugurated by Prof Omkar Nath Mohanty, Vice-Chancellor, Biju Patnaik University of Technology.

The resource personnel included S Padhy, G B Chaini, B S Panda, and three persons from hyderabad, who gave lectures as well as supervised experience of the participants in the laboratory.

The lecture session began with "Introduction to meolecular biology by G B N Chaini, biotechnology dept, Utkal University. There were then a talk on Application of Graphy theory to bioinformatics, by B S Panda of IIT Delhi, followed by a talk on computational gene hunting by S Padhy.

Second day started with discussions on various algorithms for biological systems by S Padhy, and a lecture on Symbolic Computing and Image processing by E G Rajan (Pentagon research centre, hyderabad). On the 3rd day there discussions on "hidden markov processes" and "computational drug design" by S Padhy and an Introduction to Perl by D Jena.

The financial contribution of oits to this workshop was Rs.19,000/-, with Rs.5000/- being a block grant, and the balance being towards subsidisation of registration fees of oits members and some students.
